Multiple Citation Formats

There are a number of different formats that are used to write papers and cite sources.  It's important to find out which style your instructor will require you to use.

MLA (Modern Language Association) style is primarily used in the humanities, arts, languages, and literature. If you've taken an English class, this is the format that you were probably required to use.

Most social and behavioral sciences will use the APA (American Psychological Association) citation style and format. Sociology, however, has its own style, ASA (American Sociological Association).

Citation and format styles reflect the priorities for the discipline in publishing research and providing credit to authors, scholars, researchers, and funding agencies.  The BCC Library supports APA and MLA style by providing resources and advice, but you can always consult a reference librarian for help in identifying the details of other styles.

Citation Locations in our Electronic Resources

All of the BCC Library's electronic resources provide a citation that you can cut and paste into any MS WORD document. Most citations are found under TOOLS, with the word Cite as one of several icons. Just click on that word, and another box will open up on the screen. Scroll down to the citation style you are looking for, APA or MLA, and cut(copy) and paste.

Also note that in 2020 the Journal of the American Medical Association released the 11th edition of the AMA Manual of Style. Updates include patient first inclusive language, updated guidance in legal and ethical issues, and comprehensive updates of references for digital formatting and social media. Please consult your professor if you need assistance with formatting your manuscript.  Feel free to contact a librarian for assistance in navigating references and citations in AMA.

Why You Need to Cite

Ideas matter. In our culture, we often see ideas as belonging to the person who came up with them, and these people deserve credit when you use their ideas. Other reasons to cite:

  • Give credit to the original creator
  • Demonstrate your own credibility, critical thinking, and analysis
  • Show where you found your evidence
  • Allow your reader to see, use, and interpret that evidence for themselves
  • Show that your work is part of broader conversation
